Did you know?
“The cuckoo bees (Psithyrus Species) are now regarded by some authorities as a type of bumblebee, and have been given subgenus classification status. Cuckoo bees, like the bird with the common name, are parasitic, in this case laying their eggs in bumblebee colonies. To do this, a female cuckoo bee first enters an existing bumblebee nest and kills the resident queen. The cuckoo bee is able to accomplish this ‘assassination’ because she is more powerful and more venomous. When the cuckoo bee larva hatches, it first eats the food originally intended for the host’s larva, and then eats the larva itself. The worker bumblebees then feed and raise the young of the cuckoo bee instead of their own young. Female cuckoo bees do not have the pollen-collecting structures seen on other bees, since they themselves have no intention of providing food for their young.” (Hall p.81-82, 2010)
