Pollen Nutritional Impact

Did you know?

“Chemical analyses indicate that, in theory, bee pollen is a complete and nutritious food.  But does it work in practice?  Try it for yourself and feel the difference.

Added on the diets of piglets, calves, foals, adult horses, chicks, adult laying hens and pet birds, pollen has been shown to enhance growth and overall health, to increase fertility and egg production.  Mice and rats have been shown to thrive on a diet of nothing but fresh bee pollen and water for periods of one month to longer than a year.”  (Broadhurst p.12, 2000)

Did you know?

“In a 1999 study out of Northeastern Ohio Universities, six female and six male rats of the same strain were fed nothing but Arizona desert bee pollen and water over the twelve-week period during which they grew to adulthood.  Meanwhile, six paired male and female control rats were fed standard commercial laboratory rodent chow.  The rats could eat all they wanted.

Both the male and females that were fed bee pollen remained entirely healthy.  They grew and acted normally.  They developed heavier brains than the controls.

But the most striking difference was that rats fed bee pollen ended up with far less body fat than rats fed lab chow.  The control rats were verging on obesity at the end of twelve weeks weighing three to four times more than rats fed bee pollen.

But could it be that our featured rats weighed less because they disliked eating bee pollen?  Not likely.  Several studies have demonstrated that, given a choice between lab chow and bee pollen presented side by side, rats strongly prefer pollen.  Apparently, rodents are smart enough to choose a fresh, natural whole food over processed food from a bag.  So perhaps there’s a lesson to be learned here for us humans!”  (Broadhurst p.12, 2000)
