Royal Jelly

Posted on in Uncategorized

Did you know??…

Quite why a diet of royal jelly turns a regular bee grub into a queen is not fully understood.  This creamy substance, produced in the hyprpharyngeal glands of worker bees, is fed to all larvae for a few days when they first hatch.

When a hive needs a new queen, several larvae are chosen.  Instead of being weaned on the bee bread, they are initially fed royal jelly, then they will eat honey and pollen.  One of these larva will become the new queen and she will continue to dine only on royal jelly for the rest of her life.  The queen can choose whether or not to fertilize the egg she lays; drones (male bees that have no sting and do not collect nectar) come from unfertilized eggs, while the females such as worker bees and queens come from fertilized eggs.  Queens live for years, unlike worker bees and drones, whose lifespans are counted in weeks.  Young workers feed the larvae, clean the hive and produce royal jelly until the glands fail and they then start to build the honeycomb.  They then leave the hive and work as a forager.

The link between longevity of the queen bee and royal jelly has led to the latter being endowed with mystical qualities.  Extravagant claims are made for royal jelly but these appear to have little foundation in fact.  (Fleetwood 2009, p.21)
